HOUSEHOLD PAYMENT BREAKDOWN

Raising a Child Estimate

Rules checked 1 October 2026
Estimate FTB A and B, your Parenting Payment or JobSeeker, and Rent Assistance together. CCS is paid to childcare providers and is separate from this cash estimate. Eligibility is assumed.

1. Your household

All amounts in AUD

Gross salary · 2026–27

Enter gross cash salary before income tax, excluding employer super and government payments. Salary is taxed separately for each adult. Use cash salary after salary sacrifice, before tax. Add reportable super sacrificed below, excluding compulsory employer super.

Income adjustments · leave at $0 if none

Annual amounts for each adult. These calculate family-payment ATI, not fortnightly assessable income.

Exclude the selected Parenting Payment or JobSeeker; it is added automatically. This field affects ATI and tax but is not included as cash received.

Allowable deductions, including deductible personal super. Do not subtract salary sacrifice twice.

Enter the Centrelink-adjusted amount. Exempt-employer fringe benefits may need an adjustment; check the official source below.

Salary-sacrificed and deductible personal super; exclude compulsory employer super.

Investment and rental losses already deducted when estimating taxable income.

Foreign income not already included in taxable income.

Exclude FTB, CCS and Rent Assistance.

Child maintenance paid to another person, not amounts received.

Medicare levy surcharge

Enter days without eligible private hospital cover for you and all your dependants. Use 0 for full-year cover or 365 for no cover. Extras-only cover does not qualify. Count suspended-cover days as uncovered.

Use the full grossed-up amount from your income statement here, even if the ATI fringe-benefit adjustment above is different. Super and investment-loss add-backs are taken from your adjustment fields. MLS income is different from ATI.

Assumes family status and the children entered above apply all year, full-year Medicare eligibility, no trust income, FHSS release or special super lump sums. For changes in family status or exemptions, enter confirmed tax and surcharge amounts instead.

After-tax calculation options

Basic estimate: full-year Australian tax residents aged 18+, salary only, no HELP debt or deductions. Includes LITO and a standard 2% Medicare levy. Medicare reductions/exemptions, beneficiary and pensioner offsets are not calculated. Surcharge is estimated separately from the cover details above. This can overstate or understate tax; use the entered-tax option if these apply.

If yes, enter confirmed FTB amounts below to include them. Leave estimate mode selected to show them as needing review.

2. Your children

Enter children aged 0–15 in your full-time care. Ages determine your family payment rates.

3. Income support

One payment per person. This version does not estimate a second income support payment for your partner.

4. Family payments & rent

Example values to start. Your entries stay in this page and are not saved or sent by the calculator.

Your breakdown

Ongoing amounts, before deductions

Annual amounts project the same fortnightly rate over 365 days; they are not a prediction of future rates or eligibility. Cash totals exclude tax, debts and income support supplements. FTB annual supplements appear separately. A subtotal excludes payments needing assessment; those payments are not assumed to be zero.

How combining works

Different income tests

Annual ATI is used for family payment income tests. Calculated ATI includes salary, entered adjustments and the selected taxable income-support base projected over 365 days. Do not also enter the selected payment under other taxable income. Income support uses separate fortnightly assessable incomes and assets.

Ordinary FTB A uses the maximum-rate income-support exemption when the selected base-payment estimate is positive. Eligibility and continuing payment are assumed. Shared care, maintenance, PLP and other special family rules require confirmed FTB amounts.

Rent Assistance counted once

Calculated rent assistance joins the cash subtotal only for ordinary eligible families below the FTB A income-free area or with the income-support exemption. Higher-income or complex assessments need a confirmed amount. Rent Assistance is displayed separately from the FTB A child component.

Weekly cash is fortnightly cash divided by two; monthly cash is fortnightly cash × 365 ÷ 14 ÷ 12. These are averages, not payment dates.

About Family Estimate

What can Family Estimate calculate?

Use the calculators to explore Child Care Subsidy (CCS), Family Tax Benefit, Parenting Payment, JobSeeker, Rent Assistance, Age Pension and NDIS support costs. The Raising a Child estimate combines supported family payments with estimated after-tax income.

Does the Raising a Child estimate include childcare costs?

CCS and childcare out-of-pocket costs are calculated separately in the CCS estimate. Use both tools when planning your household budget.

Is this an official Centrelink calculator?

Family Estimate is an independent planning website. Services Australia and the NDIA determine eligibility, payments and funding. Each calculator explains the rules included, fixed rate dates and circumstances requiring separate assessment.
